Preventive Dentistry

You want to keep your natural teeth your entire life, it is essential that you practice good dental hygiene in order to enjoy the lifelong benefits of having your natural teeth throughout adulthood. Once you achieve health and wellness, the primary thing you should focus on is the health of the bones and gums. As you age, however, your risks will be greater for dental concerns, so the younger you start and the better shape you are in, the more likely you are to continue that throughout your adult life. Dr. Mistikawi strongly recommends taking care of your teeth and dental hygiene, as it is the single most stabilizing influence in his practice that keeps a patient in good health. Plus, from an economic standpoint, it is the least costly and most beneficial to maintain natural teeth and dental health.

  • Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is continued in the dental office by the efforts of your dentist and dental hygienist to promote, restore, and maintain your oral health.
  • Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleaning, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.
  • Remember, even when your mouth feels healthy, there may be problems below the surface you can't see, it could be an old filling that is cracked, pockets of periodontal disease, or even indications of more serious dental concerns. During your regular checkup, Dr. Mistikawi will examine your teeth and gums, perform an oral cancer screening, and check your occlusion. We will work with you to prevent minor dental problems from growing into larger concerns that require more time and more money to treat. In addition, as a courtesy to all of our patients, we'll keep up with scheduling and reminder cards or if your prefer text messages right to your phone, so you don't have to worry about when your next appointment will be.

Dental Exam

No matter how diligent you are in your home dental care regimen, you should still get a dental exam and cleaning at least twice per year. The importance of regular dental exams cannot be over emphasized - dental exams are the cornerstone of good dental health. Thorough cleanings by our team known as Dental Prophylaxis, are essential in preventing dental problems and maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. At these visits, your teeth are cleaned and checked for cavities. Additionally, there are many other things that are checked and monitored to help detect, prevent, and maintain your dental health.

Digital X-Ray

Digital x-rays are fast and comfortable and deliver 90% less radiation than traditional x-rays as well as being very important in diagnosing a patient’s dental condition. Dental x-rays are also extremely useful in looking for hidden problems such as oral cancer, gum disease, TMJ disorders and .essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions. The digital version of the x-ray is to take a very close look at the teeth and surrounding structures with amazing accuracy much more sensitive to this radiation and has been specifically designed with YOU in mind!

Oral Cancer Screening

After the hygienist giver your teeth a thorough cleaning, Dr. Mistikawi will review the x-rays, and if necessary take new ones. During the exam Dr. Mistikawi will examine the teeth and gums, check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer. Dental problems tend to get worse when left untreated. When your see us for your regular visits, small problems won’t have a chance to become major concerns.  Prevention helps avoid serious and costly dental problems and is the key to having a healthy, confident, beautiful smile. We will work with you to prevent minor dental problems from growing into larger concerns that require more time and more money to treat

Sealants & Fluoride Treatments

A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—premolars and molars. Sealants are easily applied and take only a few minutes for each tooth. The teeth are cleaned and prepared for the sealant and the material is “painted” on the chewing surface and usually hardened with a special light. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and usually last several years before a reapplication is needed.

Periodontal Care

The oral cavity (mouth) is full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless “plaque” on teeth. Brushing and flossing help get rid of plaque. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form “tartar” that brushing does’t clean. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar. Most people usually don’t show signs of gum disease until they are in their 30s or 40s. Teenagers will rarely develop periodontitis, however;they can develop gingivitis, the milder form of gum disease. Most commonly, gum disease develops when plaque is allowed to build up along and under the gum line.

Symptoms of gum disease include:
Bad breath that won’t go away
Red or swollen gums
Tender or bleeding gums
Painful chewing
Loose teeth
Sensitive teeth
Receding gums or longer appearing teeth

Mouth guards (Sports & Occlusal)

product image 6

All children and adults who participate in contact sports should wear a mouth guard for protection of the teeth against blows to the face or mouth. A properly fitted mouth guard can help prevent broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. The mouth guard will stay in place when custom fabricated, making it easy for you to talk and breathe.
